Joining Hands Kids Camp
Each summer a one week camp for homeless and at-risk children is offered just prior to the beginning of the school year. Volunteers teach Bible school and over see other crafts and activities, serve breakfast and lunch, provide pick-up, drop-off, check-in and security. Collections are made to provide used clothing for school and new back-packs and school supplies.
Summer Feeding Program (children & youth)
The summer feeding program serves lunch to 200 children each day throughout the summer who qualified for free lunches during the school year. Volunteers serve, clean-up and supervise the children, meals are provided by the public school system.
Summer Camp
Beginning in 2010 an all day camp will be offered, with paid staff, for at-risk children all summer long. We anticipate volunteer and support opportunities for this new endeavor.
Resource Center
A volunteer staffed resource center is open from 9:00 to 12:00 Monday-Saturday. Families may receive emergency groceries, use the computer to sign up for food stamps and other aid, ‘shop’ at the career closet for clothing to wear to an interview, and register for the Holiday Tent during the holiday season. The center is expanding and plans to provide emergency financial assistance, social workers, and transitional housing.
Holiday Tent
Thanksgiving – Food is collected and distributed to registered families for the thanksgiving holiday.
Christmas – Food and toys are collected and distributed to registered families for Christmas.
Volunteers work in the Resource Center registering and qualifying families beginning in early October. Asbury serves as one collection site for food and toys. Volunteers then stock and staff the Holiday ‘shopping’ experience prior to the holiday.
